Traveling by train is a little tricky now. Travelers can not carry n- numbers of luggage with them. People will now be charged for carrying extra luggage on the trains, exactly like air travel, and in instances when anyone is caught carrying excess luggage without the booking, they will have to shell out 6-times more than the standard rates.
The Ministry of Railways recently implemented new luggage rules, which require travelers to pay significant penalties for carrying luggage that exceeds the allowable limit. According to the guidelines, passengers can carry large luggage weighing between 40 and 70 kg in the railway compartment, depending on the class of travel, the rest are needed to be booked!
If you are discovered carrying excess luggage without booking it, you will now have to pay six times the standard price. In addition, if there is excess baggage, the passenger may be charged additional fees. The minimal luggage charge is Rs 30. You can bring up to 70 kg of luggage if you travel in AC first-class; 50 kg if you travel in AC second class; and 40 kg if you travel in AC third class. The restriction for the sleeper class is 40 kg, and the limit for the second class is 35 kg.

For Booking your luggage the passenger should present the luggage at the luggage office of the booking station at least 30 minutes before the departure time. You can also book the luggage in advance while booking tickets. The Railways Ministry has urged people to travel with minimum required luggage. The ministry tweeted in Hindi which roughly translates to – “If the luggage is more, the pleasures of the journey will be reduced! Do not carry excess luggage while traveling on trains. In case of excess baggage, book the luggage with help.”
“Luggage which is not securely packed will not be accepted for booking and carriage unless the sender or his authorized agent executes a forwarding note and records therein such defects or improper packing,” said a notification regarding the same.
The Ministry of Railways took to social media to urge passengers to travel light to make it a “pleasing” experience for fellow travelers.
