Shahbaz Sharif has been elected as the 23rd Prime Minister of Pakistan. Pakistan Muslim League-N President Shahbaz Sharif won by 174 votes. He was elected as the 23rd Prime Minister of the country. After the success of the no-confidence motion against Pakistan chief Imran Khan of Tehreek -e- insaf(PTI), Shahbaz Sharif, and Shah Mehmood Qureshi were considered prime ministerial candidates. All MPs of Imran Khan’s party resigned from the National Assembly after Parliament proceedings began on Monday.
And now after all the struggle, finally the political crisis that arose regarding the government of Pakistan is over. After voting today, Shahbaz Sharif was elected Prime Minister of Pakistan, Pakistan Muslim League (Q) Chaudhry Salik Hussain and Tariq Bashir Cheema also voted for the president of PML-N.
Who is Shahbaz?
Shahbaz Sharif was born in 1951 in a wealthy industrialist family in Lahore. He studied there. After that, he took over the family business. He also has a steel company in Pakistan. Shahbaz Sharif, the joint opposition candidate for PM, is the chairman of the PML-N and the younger brother of Nawaz Sharif, a three-time prime minister of Pakistan. Shahbaz Sharif belongs to a business family. Talking about studies, he graduated from Government College, Lahore. His career in practical politics spans four decades. Shahbaz Sharif became the President of the Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry in 1985.
Political Journey
Shahbaz Sharif entered politics in the 80s. He won the first Lahore assembly election in 1988. He won re-election in 1990 after the dissolution of the Legislative Assembly. In 1993, he won the election to the National Assembly, including the Lahore Assembly, but withdrew from the National Assembly. Shahbaz first became the Chief Minister of Punjab in 1997. Shahbaz was also imprisoned when he was ousted from power by the army under the leadership of Pervez Musharraf in 1999. In 2000, he was deported to Saudi Arabia. Shahbaz and his family returned to Pakistan in 2007. On his return in 2008, Shahbaz Sharif again became the Chief Minister of Punjab. Shahbaz Sharif was elected the Chief Minister of Punjab for the third time in the 2013 elections.
Shahbaz Sharif became the President of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz in 2017 after former PM Nawaz Sharif was convicted of hiding assets following the Panama Papers leak case. Shahbaz Sharif has completely stood shoulder to shoulder with Nawaz when Nawaz was disqualified from the post of PM by the Supreme Court and the legal action that followed. When Nawaz Sharif was sent to Britain for treatment, at that time the situation of PTI in the country was considered very bad. In such a situation, Shahbaz Sharif had also done the work of strengthening the party.
He worked day and night not only for the strength of Nawaz Sharif but also for the strength of the party. After that Shahbaz Sharif became active in national politics for the first time and now PML-N has nominated Shahbaz Sharif as a prime ministerial candidate in the 2018 general elections. However, Imran Khan’s party Tehreek-e-Insaf won the election.
Shahbaz Sharif became the Leader of the Opposition. Since then, he has been pitted against Imran as the biggest opposition leader, not only raised but he is also presented as a PM face. Along with Nawaz Sharif, Shahbaz Sharif has also faced many allegations. However, he was not convicted in any of the cases. In September 2020, Shahbaz was arrested in a multi-crore money laundering case but was released on bail in April 2021.
