On Wednesday, Jharkhand Police arrested suspended BJP leader Seema Patra on suspicion of abusing her 29-year-old tribal helper Sunita. Patra, the wife of an ex-IAS officer, has been charged with abusing her domestic worker for years at Argora police station.
According to a report, Superintendent of Police Kishor Kaushal stated that Patra has been arrested and that additional processes are being completed. Patra will likely be produced in court later today.
However, after being detained, the suspended BJP leader declared her innocence and called the charges “politically driven.” Patra was a member of the BJP’s women’s wing’s national working committee. Maheshwar Patra, her spouse, is a former IAS official. Deepak Prakash, the state BJP head, authorized the action against Patra after footage of her domestic worker accusing her of maltreatment went viral.
Seema Patra reportedly held the woman hostage in her home in Ranchi’s posh Ashok Nagar neighborhood for several years. Patra was suspended by the BJP after a video of the lady, Sunita, detailing her horror went viral on social media, prompting calls for Patra’s arrest. Ranchi Police rescued the lady from Patra’s apartment last week after receiving a tip from a government employee and recorded her testimony before a magistrate on Tuesday.
Sunita was allegedly tortured with a hot pan and iron rods and made to lick pee on the floor during years of torment. Sunita, whose teeth had also been broken with an iron rod, was unable to stand on her own when she was discovered because she had been locked in a room with no food or water. Sunita is currently receiving treatment at Ranchi’s Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS). The arrest of the suspended BJP politician comes a day after Governor Ramesh Bais questioned DGP Neeraj Sinha about the lack of action against her.
