Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu on Friday surrendered in a Patiala court, a day after the Supreme Court sentenced him to one-year rigorous imprisonment in the 1988 road-rage death case. “He has surrendered before the court,” Sidhu’s media advisor Surinder Dalla told reporters outside the court.
Sidhu was taken into judicial custody after surrendering before the Chief Judicial Magistrate. Sidhu had reached the court with a bag full of clothes. Sidhu did not talk to anyone while going to court. In fact, the Supreme Court on Thursday sentenced Navjot Singh Sidhu to one year’s rigorous imprisonment, saying that any undue sympathy for inadequate punishment harms the justice system and undermines public confidence in the law.
If administrative officials are to be believed, Sidhu was taken for medical examination and will be kept in jail here. Sidhu, 58, reached the district court in the afternoon. Sidhu skipped dinner on the very first day of his imprisonment saying that he had already had his dinner. But he took some medicine. “There is no special food arrangement for them in the jail. If a doctor recommends a particular food, he can either buy it from the prison canteen or make it himself”.
Former Punjab Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu will earn between Rs 40-60 per day during the one-year imprisonment sentence by the Supreme Court. This is the same jail where Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia is also lodged in a drug case. However, their barracks are different.
Since Sidhu has been sentenced to rigorous imprisonment, he will have to act as per the jail manual. However, he will be trained for the first three months. According to the jail manual, an unskilled prisoner gets 40 per day and a skilled prisoner gets 60 per day.
On Friday, Sidhu sought some time from the Supreme Court before surrendering as he said he wanted to settle his medical matters. After 4 pm, Sidhu surrendered in the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate Amit Malhan. They were taken to Mata Kaushalya Hospital for mandatory medical check-ups, after which he was shifted to his designated barracks. Former Punjab Congress President Sidhu has been kept in Ward No 10 of Patiala Jail.
Prisoner number 241383 i.e. Navjot Singh Sidhu is kept in the cell, which is about 10 by 15 feet, he has a chair-table, a cupboard, a blanket, a bed, two towels, a mosquito net, a copy- Pens, one pair of shoes, two bedsheets and four kurta-pajamas have been given.
Sidhu’s media advisor Surinder Dalla told that Sidhu has already had two-three surgeries. He has had diseases related to liver and blood clotting. He underwent DVT surgery in 2015 at a Delhi hospital, in which blood clots formed in his veins. Surinder said that Sidhu will have to take care of his illness in jail and avoid eating things made from wheat flour.
The day of the prisoners in the jail starts at 5.30 am. Breakfast of biscuits etc. is given at 7 o’clock. A meal with six chapatis, lentils, or vegetables is given at 8.30 in the morning. After that, the prisoners go to work. The prisoners’ work ends at 5.30 in the evening. During this, work is allotted to them according to the category. The prisoners get food at around 6 pm. In which six rotis, pulses, or vegetables are given. All the prisoners are locked in their barracks till 7 pm.
