According to a National Crime Records Bureau (NRCB) report, the national capital had the greatest number of rape cases among all 19 metropolitan cities, with an average of three rapes reported per day in the previous year.
According to the report, Delhi also registered 13,892 incidents of crimes against women in 2021, a huge increase of more than 40% from the previous year’s tally of 9,782.
For the third year in a row, Delhi topped the list of metropolitan cities in terms of crimes against women. Crimes against women increased by 40% in 2021 compared to the previous year, with 1,226 rapes and 136 dowry deaths.
The alleged gang rape of a 30-year-old woman by four railway personnel inside an electrical maintenance room at the New Delhi train station sparked a widespread outcry in July.
The city also has the greatest number of crimes against minors and older individuals in the country.
In the area of crimes against women, Delhi topped the list of metropolitan cities with 4,674 reported incidences of maltreatment by husbands or relatives in 2021.
Delhi was followed by Mumbai, the financial center, with 5,543 such incidents, and Bengaluru, with 3,127. Mumbai and Bengaluru accounted for 12.76% and 7.2% of overall crime in the 19 cities, respectively.
According to senior police personnel, the majority of rape and assault on women are committed by persons familiar to the victims and are not immediately avoidable by the police.
“Approximately 95% of crimes against women are committed by their family and hence do not constitute crimes against law and order.” “The police have no direct control over such situations,” one officer explained.
In 2021, the national capital also had the largest number of recorded incidents of crimes against women in the categories of kidnapping (3948), cruelty by spouses (4674), and girl child rapes (833) when compared to other metropolitan cities with a population of more than two million people. According to the report, nearly two females were raped per day in Delhi in 2021. According to the research, the national capital recorded 13,982 occurrences of crimes against women in 2021, while the overall number of offenses in all 19 metropolitan areas was 43,414.
In 2021, the capital recorded 136 incidents of dowry death, accounting for 36.26 percent of all dowry fatalities in 19 metropolitan areas. In addition, the city recorded 3,948 occurrences of female abduction and kidnapping, out of a total of 8,664 cases in all metropolitan cities. Last year, Delhi also reported 2,022 incidences of assault on women with the purpose to offend their modesty. According to the NCRB, there were 1,357 recorded instances under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses Act (female child victims exclusively) in 2021. According to the data, 833 incidents of female child rape were recorded in 2021, the most among metropolitan cities.
The officer listed some of the actions done by the police to reduce crimes against women, including organizing self-defense training camps for women and placing up pink booths near dark locations in the city that are prone to women-centric crimes.
“The increase in the crime rate implies that more cases are now being reported, and people are coming out with their problems,” said Delhi Police PRO Suman Nalwa. Several safety steps are being implemented with women and children in mind to reduce such incidences. Senior citizens are also given the training to help them avoid becoming victims of cyber fraud.” Last year, the city had 1,166 occurrences of crime against older adults.
