A level 2 fire broke out at a film set in Mumbai’s Andheri West, officials of the city’s fire brigade department said on Friday, adding that the set was installed at Chitrakoot Ground next to the Andheri Sports Complex near Link Road.
The blaze erupted at a film set at Chitrakoot Ground next to Andheri Sports Complex, which is surrounded by several high-rise residential and commercial buildings, around 4.30 pm, a civic official said.
Officials had earlier said the fire started in a shop but confirmed later that it erupted at a temporary pandal where wooden material and other things were stored.
While initial reports said there were no injuries or deaths, news agency ANI reported later in the day that one person, a 32-year-old man, was brought dead at the Cooper Hospital. Manish Devashi (32) was sent to Cooper hospital after he was severely injured, where he was declared dead later in the evening.
Plumes of black smoke were caught on camera billowing from the spot. The fire was doused after five hours with eight fire engines, five water jetties, and other equipment. The fire was confined to a temporary pandal where some wooden material and other things were stored, the official said, adding that the cause of the fire was not yet clear.
Two sets, one belonging to Rajshri Productions and another of director Luv Ranjan’s film, were gutted in the fire, Ashok Dubey, general secretary of the Federation of Western India Cine Employees, said. One person doing set lighting on Ranjan’s set suffered minor injuries, he added.
Firefighters are yet to ascertain the cause of the Level-2 fire. Dubey alleged that the contractor who erected the sets was the person who had erected the set at Bangur Nagar that had caught fire a year ago. “Fires keep breaking out quite often (on film sets) and we fail to understand on what basis the municipal corporation gives permission to build sets. Fire safety rules should be followed,” Dubey said.
As per reports, no shooting was going on at the set, and Ranbir and Shraddha were expected to begin shooting next week. The movie marks Ranbir and Shraddha’s first collaboration and will be helmed by Luv Ranjan.
