The famed Miss Universe pageant is preparing to allow married women to compete in a historic move. The Miss Universe beauty pageant is widening the competition’s eligibility by allowing moms and married women to compete.
Beginning in 2023, marriage and parental status will no longer be considered for determining competitor eligibility.
Until now, the Miss Universe pageant’s regulations required Miss Universe winners to be unmarried and stay so throughout the duration of their reign. Traditionally, victors have been required not to become pregnant while reigning as Miss Universe, resulting in the elimination of mothers.
Andrea Meza, the Miss Universe 2020 winner representing Mexico, applauded the new rule modification. “I honestly adore that this is happening,” she said in an interview with Insider. “Just as society evolves and women are increasingly assuming leadership positions where previously only males could, it was about time pageants modernized and opened themselves to women with kids.”
Harnaaz Sandhu of India was named Miss Universe 2021. The Punjab-based Harnaaz Sandhu represented India in the 70th Miss Universe 2021, which was held in Eilat, Israel. Only two Indians have previously won the title of Miss Universe: actresses Sushmita Sen in 1994 and Lara Dutta in 2000.
