Jignesh Mevani, Gujarat MLA and Dalit leader who was arrested by the Assam Police in the western state for his purported tweet against the Prime Minister got bail from the Kokrajhar court. He was granted bail on Monday. A local court in Kokrajhar court sent Jignesh Mevani into judicial custody for one day. It was informed by the Advocate Angshuman Bora, lawyer of Jignesh Mevani. Mevani was taken into judicial prison for a day after the local court postponed its decision on his bail appeal until Monday.
Mevani was detained by an Assam police squad from Palanpur, Gujarat, on Wednesday night over a handful of his tweets. Charges on Mevani were sections 120B (criminal conspiracy), 153(A) (promoting enmity between two communities), 295(A), 504 (intentional insult with the purpose to incite a breach of peace), and parts of the Information Technology Act. An FIR was filed against him after a complaint was filed by an Assam BJP leader, Arup Kumar Dey.
A couple of tweets from Mevani’s Twitter handles are missing from his feeds display. They were withheld under the legal demands based in India. In his tweet, Mevani requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi to ensure communal harmony during his Gujarat visit. Mevani claims that his detention is a sheer political matter. The State Congress branch in Assam has condemned the Gujarat Legislator’s Detention. Mevani was elected as an Independent MLA from Congress in 2019.
