The Mumbai Police on Monday filed an application in a special court seeking cancellation of the bail granted to Lok Sabha MP Navneet Rana and her MLA husband Ravi Rana over the Hanuman Chalisa recitation row.
The police sought that the couple’s bail be cancelled on the ground that they had allegedly violated one of the conditions imposed by the special court while granting them bail last week. Navneet Rana, the Lok Sabha member from Amravati in Maharashtra, and her husband Ravi Rana, the legislator from Badnera in Amravati, were arrested by the Mumbai police on April 23 after they announced that they would recite the Hanuman Chalisa outside the Chief Minister’s house.
This development comes a day after the public prosecutor Pradeep Gharat sought a bail cancelation for the Rana couple for violating the bail condition imposed by the special court, of not speaking to the media.”The accused persons (Navneet Rana and Ravi Rana) have given interviews to the media since their release and hence, flouted the condition imposed by the special court while granting them bail. We are seeking for the bail to be cancelled and a warrant to be issued to the accused and they are taken in custody forthwith,” says Gharat.
As Navneet Rana was discharged from the Lilawati Hospital yesterday after her earlier release on bail, she talked to the media at large, challenging Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray to contest against her. She also said “if reciting the Hanuman Chalisa was a crime, she would do it again and again”, calling it a “religious fight she would carry on”. This seemed to be in violation of her bail order, which had directed her to not speak to the media about the case while out. Special PP Pradeep Gharat will move for a cancellation of bail of the Rana couple, for the violation of their bail conditions.

Navneet Rana and her husband Ravi Rana were arrested by Mumbai police on April 23 after they had announced that they would recite Hanuman Chalisa in front of ‘Matoshree’, Uddhav Thackeray’s private residence. However, they had withdrawn their plan citing the visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the city for an award ceremony on April 24.
The couple was booked for charges of sedition and promoting enmity between two groups. Navneet Rana is an MP from Amravati and her husband is an MLA from Badnera. They were granted bail on the 4th of May and the special court has imposed some conditions for this, which was not to indulge in any similar offense and not to make any public appearance and speak to social media.
Navneet Rana and her husband left for Delhi on Monday and said they would approach Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah to raise the issue of their alleged ill-treatment by Maharashtra authorities when the couple was in jail. In Mumbai, while talking to the reporters, Navneet Rana alligates Uddhav Thackrey not to teach them about principles as he himself backstabbed the BJP and also denied that they exempted the court and spoke to the media.
