The safety of the passengers traveling in the car is now going to be better than before. Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari has said that soon six airbags will be made a standard safety feature in all new cars sold in India. The new rules will come into effect from October 1, 2022. According to the report, due to the additional airbags, the price of the vehicles can be increased by up to 50 thousand. At present, the price of 6 airbags models and variants starts from around Rs 10 lakh.
Nitin Gadkari said that the time has come for India to adopt more stringent safety standards, which should be for both vehicles and pedestrians. He said that the safety standards can be increased by making six airbags mandatory in the cars sold in India.
Earlier in January, the ministry had approved a draft notification to make six airbags mandatory in eight-passenger trains. The ministry issued a draft notification in January 2022, outlining new rules that would make six airbags mandatory for all cars as standard. According to the notification, this rule will be applicable to all new cars from October 1, 2022.
Presently these safety features are followed:
Driver airbags were made mandatory for all vehicles in India from April 1, 2019. Subsequently, dual airbags were made mandatory. The government has mandated dual airbags as well as rear parking sensors and anti-lock brakes as standard safety features for all cars.
