Earlier it was known that Mr. Fadnavis would be the new Chief Minister and Mr. Shinde would be the Deputy Chief Minister of Maharastra. Today at 7.30 pm Mr. Eknath Shinde arrived at the Raj Bhawan for the swearing-in ceremony. Eknath Shinde started his oath by paying tribute to Shiv Sena patriarch Bal Thackeray and late Sena leader Anand Dighe.

While Fadnavis had earlier decided to stay out of the Cabinet, he took oath as the deputy CM. The development came moments after BJP chief JP Nadda had requested Fadnavis to become the deputy CM of the state.
In a joint press conference, Fadnavis had earlier said that the BJP will support Shinde as the CM, but will himself stay out of the cabinet to ensure the smooth functioning of the alliance and the government.
While declaring Shinde as the CM, Fadnavis had said: “The BJP has decided that it will support Eknath Shinde as the chief minister of the state. Eknath Shinde will alone take oath at 7.30 pm today. After the ceremony, further decisions on the expansion of the cabinet will be taken. The cabinet will comprise the Shiv Sena, the allies, the independents, and the BJP. I will not be a part of the cabinet, but I will take responsibility for the smooth functioning of the alliance and the government. I will provide full support and co-operation to the government.
Meanwhile, Shinde, who was camping in Guwahati with rebel Shiv Sena MLAs, returned to Mumbai from Goa on Thursday afternoon, following which he and Fadnavis met the Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari to stake claim to form the government.
After swearing in as the chief minister of Maharashtra CM Eknath Shinde changed his profile picture on Twitter and Facebook to reflect a new image with Bal Thackeray.

Nonetheless, in a deja vu moment, the BJP seems poised to form the government in Maharashtra with the support of the Shinde faction. The BJP and the Shiv Sena had contested as an alliance and won the 2019 state elections, bagging 162 out of 288 seats with a 42% vote share.

On Wednesday, Uddhav Thackeray resigned as the Maharashtra chief minister, just after the Supreme Court refused to stay the Governor’s directive to his government to take a floor test in the Assembly. Thackeray’s resignation capped a week-long drama of resort politics, where rebel Shiv Sena MLAs led by minister Eknath Shinde camped in luxury hotels and hopped on chartered jets from Mumbai to Surat and Guwahati, before landing in Goa on Wednesday night.
