A passenger train partially derailed in eastern Iran, killing at least 17 people and injuring 50 more, including some critically. A major train accident occurred in eastern Iran early on Wednesday, in which more than ten people died. A passenger train collided with the Excavator near Tabas City, after which four coaches of the train got derailed. 13 passengers died in this accident and more than 50 are said to be injured. Four of the seven cars in the train derailed in the early morning darkness near the desert city of Tabas, the report said. Tabas is some 550 kilometers (340 miles) southeast of the capital, Tehran.
Some of them are in serious condition. Local media reports said that the number of injured and dead could increase due to this train accident. Four out of seven coaches of the train derailed in the early hours of today near Tabas. A team of relief workers along with an ambulance and three helicopters reached the spot. The chief of disaster management told, ‘Five ambulances are present at the scene, while 12 more are on the way.’Rescue teams with ambulances and helicopters had arrived in the remote area where communication is poor.
The derailment took place some 50 kilometers (30 miles) from the desert city of Tabas, on the rail that connects the town with the central city of Yazd. The official claimed that the crash occurred at 5:30 a.m. local time. The fatalities are being examined by forensic teams in order to identify the bodies. Five villages were also damaged in the incident.
Iran saw its worst train disaster in 2004 when a train loaded with gasoline, fertilizer, sulfur, and cotton crashed near Neyshabur, killing nearly 320 people and injuring 460 others.
Ambulances took the injured victims to the Tabas Hospital, where specialized teams of surgeons, neurosurgeons, and orthopedists are present.
